i'm jewish and two of my closest friends are a muslim woman and a christian woman, and today we decided that this weekend would be a more opportune time of year than the month of december to say "happy holidays" since it's good friday and easter sunday, passover, and ramadan all happening on one weekend, rather than like. hanukkah, christmas, kwanzaa, new year's, etc. happening roughly over the course of 4-6 weeks. so. happy holidays to anyone celebrating this weekend :)
The Outbursts of Everett True was a comic strip that ran in papers from 1905 to 1927, wherein the aforementioned Everett True regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude. Men have not only been taking up too much room on public transport for about as long as public transport has existed, but the people around them have been irritated about it for at least a hundred years. The next time someone tries to claim that manspreading is a false phenomenon, please direct them to this strip so that Everett True can correct their misconceptions with an umbrella upside the head.
I have never before heard of Everett True, but if he “regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude,” I have a strong spiritual connection with him.

I’m very lucky to own a book that’s a collection of most of these comics (sadly not all of them) and would highly recommend hunting these down if you can. Sorry for the lack of a scanner but phone photos will just have to do.

i cannot even begin to express how much this guy is telling on himself here as someone who refuses to enjoy or respect the perspective of anyone who isn't just like him (or what he wants to be...? like. this guy said that 'until now, pixar has had a great track record, much like marvel!' we get it, you can relate to genetically modified captain america and the hulk who turns into a giant green monster when he gets too emotional but a third generation immigrant chinese girl who turns into a giant red panda when she gets emotional is just going too far)

you are still upholding and enforcing white-only narratives if you only want people of color to exist as one dimensional side characters with zero insight into their culture.
even the director who has said that the story is semi-autobiographical - she and the production designer both stated that it is not a chinese film, but that it is a coming of age film that happens to be about a chinese girl.
and that is obvious from just watching it, the metaphor in the film is obvious, the intention of the film is clear! this is about the teenage experience, and everyone's adolescent experience is different. the fact that this escapes a 40 year old man is hilarious, and so, so pathetic.
tldr; when you have a problem with a multi-cultural story about growing up, purely because it does not reflect or mirror your own culturally barren upbringing, that's on you for being, and remaining, xenophobic and racist.

one piece of early internet culture that I think we need to bring back is “don’t feed the trolls,” but like, for fandom.
it used to be common knowledge that if you engage with people who are just looking to start shit, you’re only encouraging them to continue to do that. modern fandom, however, seems to have this idea that you can do something about it if you just respond the right way, make the right points, or counter their argument well enough, but that only works if these people are acting in good faith, which they aren’t.
someone talking shit about your favorite show is not looking to have an informed discussion about your respective opinions.
someone deliberately mischaracterizing your favorite character for the sake of their argument does not actually care what the text says about them.
someone telling you all their reasons why you shouldn’t ship your favorite ship isn’t really trying to get you to change your mind.
it doesn’t matter how masterfully you can deconstruct any of these arguments, because what they’re after is validation and attention. no matter how you respond to them (yes, even if it’s a simple “fuck off”) you give them what they’re looking for. there’s no winning against these people, so don’t bother engaging with them in the first place. just delete their asks, ignore their comments, and block their blogs.
don’t feed the trolls, because it only encourages their behavior.
